Asus X550 Notebook Review
Price: $399Visit Website
Mini notebooks design has become trend in recent years, reducing the thickness and weight of the device while maintaining the standard form factors. Everyone wants to be thin and elegant notebook, but the desire to shell out $ 1,000 for a ultrabook with many missing. Trying to satisfy the greatest number of users, the Asus company has released a series of available K and S in a thin shell, and now range has expanded, and X-series model X550.
Design and Ergonomics
Externally, this notebook does not differ from its predecessors and counterparts in the series, as is made in a classic design for Asus. A distinctive feature of the X550 has a very slim body – 24 mm with a thickening at the point where the battery up to 31 mm. In addition, the laptop is also quite lightweight – 2.3 kg. Metal on the case, of course not, because it is a laptop worth about $400. Basic material – practical matte plastic in black and gray with a textured pattern on the lid, like the ripples Ultrabook Zenbook. This model is also available in red and blue colors.
The working surface and the ground is not pressed through – inside the laptop components are placed so compact that it had a positive effect on the density of the housing. The issue is only the protection of a matrix – if slightly press down the lid, the screen will divorce, so that it should be careful when transporting the notebook. I was pleased with build-in quality, squeaks and no backlash.
A set of interface connectors has remained unchanged for over three generations of 15-inch laptops X-series and X550 is no exception. On the side faces placed on one port USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, but them – video outputs HDMI and VGA, LAN-connector, combo audio jack, multi-format card reader and a DVD-ROM drive.
Wireless modules carry Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.0.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Asus X550 is equipped with a standard island-type keyboard with a dedicated number pad. The keys in the main square and flat, with little progress, so it may seem that to work with the text keyboard does not suit very well, but I like to work on it. Triggering a clear and typos are rare. Highlighting key here, of course not.
The touchpad is large and look good. Module slightly recessed into the work surface, it is bordered by a small ledge. Of course, it supports for a large number of multi-touch gestures. Soft to the touch matte finish does not hinder movement of the fingers, the cursor control easy and precise.
Display and Sound
This model is supplied with the usual glossy TN-matrix with a diagonal of 15.6 inches and a resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The maximum brightness is 186 cd/m2 and contrast panel – 79:1. It is quite typical values for this type of matrices, like the small viewing angles – it is comfortable to watch a movie will only alone, a maximum of two people.
The sound system consists of a pair of speakers that support the technology SonicMaster. Sounds good, with a good stock volume and a hint of surround sound. However, for listening to music tracks, I would advise using quality headphones or external speakers.
Model X550 comes with processors Intel (Celeron, Pentium, Core i3/i5/i7) and AMD A8. The laptop hard drive capacity is set to 1 TB and up to 8 GB of RAM. Graphics processing depending on the equipment involved in the integrated video chip Intel HD Graphics, a discrete graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M or AMD Radeon HD 8550G +8670 M Dual Graphics.
Our test is based on the processor Intel Core i3-3227U clocked at 1.9 GHz. Installed hard drive holds 500 GB and RAM is 6 GB. As a graphics card used graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M. Productivity is high enough for any task, and with games laptop easy to manage.
Autonomy is provided by a removable battery capacity of 44 W * h. One of its charge is sufficient to operate the laptop while reading from a muted display brightness and disabled wireless modules for nearly 7 hours. Under load endurance falls to two hours. Not a bad result.
Asus has once again released a very good, and most importantly, affordable all-purpose notebook. Its main advantage is a decent performance, compact size and low cost. If you need two USB ports and you’re not running after various “twists” in the form of a metal housing and other excesses, the Asus X550 is just what you need.
